Belltable:Connect is delighted to announce an open call for applications to its fifth workshop in Masterclass Series, supported by the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon under the Theatre Artist Development Scheme.

For our fifth Masterclass, we welcome Fishamble: The New Play Company.

This week with Fishamble will explore playwriting and the creation of new plays, from the perspective of the dramaturg, director and playwright.  Gavin Kostick (Fishamble’s literary manager) will begin the week by exploring playwriting on Tuesday and Wednesday, then Jim Culleton (Fishamble’s artistic director) will examine the role of the director working on new plays, on Thursday. The week will end on Friday with playwright Deirdre Kinahan discussing the role of, and challenges facing, the playwright. Ideas covered will include structure, characterisation, and process both before and during rehearsals. Plays explored during the week will include Deirdre’s plays for Fishamble, and also the solo plays of Pat Kinevane, which will run in Belltable during the same week.

Tuesday 8th May to Friday 11th May 2018, from 10 am to 5 pm, at Belltable (69 O’Connell Street, Limerick City).

Jim Culleton
Jim Culleton is artistic director of Fishamble, for which he has directed many productions in Ireland and on tour to 19 other countries. His productions for Fishamble have won Irish and international awards including an Olivier Award. He has also directed productions for the Abbey Theatre, RTE, Gaiety Theatre, and IAC/Symphony Space, Broadway.

Gavin Kostick
As Literary Manager at Fishamble, Gavin works with new writers for theatre through script development, readings and a variety of courses. Gavin is also an award-winning playwright. He has written over a dozen plays which have been produced in Dublin, on tour around Ireland, the UK, New York, Philadelphia and Romania. His most recent works are The End of the Road for Fishamble, This is What We Sang for Kabosh (Belfast and New York), The Sit and Fight Night on tour 2011 and An Image for the Rose outdoors for Whiplash Theatre Company. He is currently working on new plays for Fishamble and Whiplash, and an Opera with composer Raymond Deane for RTÉ Lyric.

Deirdre Kinahan
Award-winning playwright Deirdre Kinahan is actively involved in the Irish Theatre Sector both as Playwright and Producer. Her work is translated into many languages and produced regularly both in Ireland and on the International stage. Plays include: RISE (Old Vic), WILD SKY, SPINNING, HALCYON DAYS, BOGBOY, MOMENT, HUE & CRY, MELODY, MAISY DALY’S RAINBOW. For Radio: BOGBOY (RTE) & A BAG ON BALLYFINCH PLACE (BBC) In 2017 Deirdre is under commission to Manhattan Theatre Club (New York), Fishamble Theatre Company (Ireland), The Old Vic (London), Meath County Council (Ireland) and has numerous other theatre and writing projects in development.

This 4-day, 24-hour masterclass is intended for Ireland-based professional playwrights or professional theatre artists interested in new plays. The masterclass is open to 10 participants. Successful applicants will receive a stipend to help cover their costs.


  • Submissions are welcome from professional individual Irish or Ireland-based playwrights and theatre artists interested in new plays, applications from collectives or groups will not be accepted
  • Applicants must be over 18 years of age
  • The masterclass takes place in Limerick City and applicants must be present for the duration, from Tuesday 8th May to Friday 11th May, 2018.
  • Applications are welcome from artists who previously applied for and/or are currently taking part in other Belltable:Connect programmes

Closing Date: Monday, 9th April 2018, 12 noon.
Late applications will be deemed ineligible.
Applications will be assessed by a panel, whose decision is final.
Application is by open call to ensure fair selection and a wide range of participants.
Applicants will be informed if they were successful on or before Friday, 20th April 2018.

Stipend: Successful applicants will receive a stipend to help cover their costs to the amount of €300 each – subject to terms and conditions.

Running in the first half of 2018, the Masterclass Series is an opportunity to engage, stimulate and motivate theatre makers to enhance and develop their skills in Limerick. The 5-months programme offers participants a vibrant and dynamic schedule of intensive masterclasses with renowned Irish and international theatre makers and companies. Each masterclass is open to ten professional Ireland-based artists and each has a different focus.
